External student funding sources

External support for Western Michigan University student researchers is available from a number of agencies providing grants. Below is a sampling of those and other external funding resources. Once a funding source has been identified, the Office of the Vice President for Research can help with proposal development. Contact a research program officer for assistance.

Recommended external database searches

  • Grants.gov—A source for all federal grants.
  • GrantSearch—Maintained by the Grants Resource Center, GrantSearch contains more than 1,500 funding opportunities that support academic activities such as research, education, training, fellowships, program or curriculum development, and equipment acquisition. Contact a research program officer for information on accessing this database.
  • Pathways to Science—Maintains a database of undergrad and graduate opportunities.
  • SciVal—This subscription-based funding information portal is available to all WMU students, faculty and staff.
  • University of California Los Angeles—Maintains a helpful database of graduate and postdoc funding sources, fellowships and internships.
  • Zintellect—A listings of internships, experiential learning opportunities, academic fellowships and scholarships funded by government and private-sector organizations. These programs are administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities and the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education.

Internal student funding sources

  • College of Arts and Sciences funds—WMU’s College of Arts and Sciences maintains a list of awards, scholarships and financial aid available to its students whose majors are in humanities, social sciences and sciences.
  • Undergraduate Research Excellence Award—The Office of the Vice President for Research provides undergraduate students at WMU with opportunities to take part in mentored research or creative activities with an externally funded faculty member.
