Many WMU offices closed during holiday recess

KALAMAZOO--Except for essential and emergency services, Western Michigan University will be closed beginning Friday, Dec. 24, and will reopen Monday, Jan. 3. Holiday recess begins with the end of fall semester Dec. 18, and many campus services are already closed or have reduced hours through the start of spring semester.

Public events on campus during holiday recess include School of Music concerts, Richmond Center art exhibits, Bronco hockey at Lawson Ice Arena, and Bronco men's basketball games at University Arena. Visit the Events Calendar for up-to-date listings.

Residence halls reopen at 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 8.

Spring semester begins at 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 10.

Listed below are hours for selected University offices and services. Faculty, students and the public are encouraged to call ahead to make sure that a particular office on campus is open. For emergencies only, contact WMU Public Safety at (269) 387-5555.

Admissions office closes at 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 23, and reopens Monday, Jan. 3.

Bernhard Center and Bronco Mall hours are available on the Bernhard Center website. All facilities and mall stores are on reduced hours Friday, Dec. 17, through Sunday, Jan. 9. The entire building is closed Sunday, Dec. 19; beginning at 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 23, through Sunday, Jan. 2; and Saturday, Jan. 8. All facilities and stores resume normal hours Monday, Jan. 10.

Campus computing

The Help Desk is closed Sunday, Dec. 19; open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 20-23; closed Dec. 24 through Jan. 2; open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 3-7; and closed Jan. 8-9. The Help Desk resumes normal hours at 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 10.

The Mobile Help Desk is closed and reopens Sunday, Jan. 9, at 7:30 p.m.

Bernhard Computing Center in the Bronco Mall closes at 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 17, and reopens at 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 10.

University Computing Center lab is open reduced hours 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 20-23; closed Dec. 24-26; open noon to 5 p.m. Dec. 27-30; closed Dec. 31 through Jan. 2; open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 3-7; closed Jan. 8-9; and resumes normal hours at 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 10.

Sindecuse Health Center, including the pharmacy, is closed Saturday, Dec. 18; open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 20-22; open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 23; closed Dec. 24-26; open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 27-29; closed Dec. 30 through Jan. 2; open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 3-7; closed Jan. 8-9; and resumes normal hours at 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 10. Medical emergencies should be referred to local hospitals or other health care providers.

Student Recreation Center hours are available on the center's website. It is open reduced hours 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Dec. 15-16; 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dec. 17; closed Dec. 18-19; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Dec. 20-22; 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 23; closed Dec. 24 through Jan. 2; open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Jan. 3-7; open noon to 7 p.m. Jan. 8-9; and resumes normal hours at 6 a.m. Monday, Jan. 10.

Unified Clinics closes at 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 23, and reopens Monday, Jan. 3.

The University Substance Abuse Clinic is open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Dec. 13-16; open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 17; closed Dec. 18-19; open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Dec. 20-23; closed Dec. 24-26; open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Dec. 27-30; closed Dec. 31 through Jan. 2; and resumes normal hours at 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 3. Waldo Library is open reduced hours 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 17; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 18; closed Dec. 19; open noon to 5 p.m. Dec. 20-23; closed Dec. 24 through Jan. 2; open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 3-7; closed Jan. 8-9; and resumes normal hours at 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 10.

To reduce energy costs during holiday recess and closure, temperature settings in most campus buildings will be reduced to no lower than 55 degrees. Vacant residence halls and classrooms will be set back beginning Dec. 18. Office spaces will be set back starting Dec. 24. All areas will be back to the normal temperature setting of 69 degrees by Jan. 3, when the University reopens.

Also to reduce costs, parking lots outside unoccupied buildings and student commuter lots will not be plowed during the recess and closure periods. All main campus roads and parking areas for on-campus events will continue to be cleared as usual.
