Apply to the Doctor of Philosophy Program

Students applying for the doctoral program in the Department of Sociology at Western Michigan University should follow the application deadlines and instructions.

Timeline

  • Jan. 15: Completed applications due in the department.
  • Jan. 15 to Feb. 28: Review process.
  • March 15: Department sends out first round of funding offers.
  • April 15: Acceptance of funding by students due back to department.
  • April 30: Second (final) round of funding offers sent.
  • May 15: Acceptance of second round of funding by students due back to department.

Admission requirements

For admission consideration to the doctoral program in sociology, you must satisfy these requirements:

  • Applications and all attachments listed above must be received by the department by Jan. 15.
  • Grade point average of 3.0 or better in undergraduate sociology courses.
  • Grade point average of 3.25 or better in all graduate courses.
  • Master’s degree in sociology or a closely related field. Applicants with degrees in fields other than sociology may be required to make up deficiencies as a condition of matriculation.

No single requirement is sufficient to guarantee an offer of admission or to dictate a denial of admission. The information you submit is carefully evaluated by the Central Graduate Committee to ascertain whether you are likely to succeed in graduate studies in sociology and if you have the intellectual interests which can be cultivated by the department's areas of strength.

Application

U.S. citizens and resident aliens may apply using either the self-managed application process or the online application process. Submit your application and additional materials by Jan. 15.

Self-managed application

With the self-managed application process, you take responsibility for gathering all admission materials and submitting these materials before the Jan. 15 deadline. Instructions are on the application form which may be requested through the Office of Admissions. Contact the graduate advisor in the Department of Sociology for additional materials required by the department and for assistance in the admissions process.

Online application

You may choose to complete the application online. Contact the graduate advisor in the Department of Sociology for additional materials required by the department and for assistance in the admissions process.

International students

Graduate applications for international students are processed by the Office of International Admissions and Services in the Haenicke Institute for Global Education and then passed along to the Department of Sociology for the admission decision.

You may apply using either the self-managed application process or the international online application process. Submit your application and additional materials by Jan. 15.

Additional information to submit

The following must be submitted as part of your application to the program:

  • GRE scores.
  • Official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate schools attended.
  • Personal statement—two to three pages on one’s academic background, research interests and focus of study and professional goals related to the study of sociology.
  • Sample of original academic writing.
  • Three letters of recommendation from academic or professional sources.
  • TOEFL scores (international applicants only).
