Student using computerThe Department of Economics at Western Michigan University recognizes the importance of a quality education and is dedicated to helping you find a way to achieve your higher education goals.

In addition to the undergraduate and graduate financial aid available through WMU Student Financial Aid and Scholarships, the following resources are available.

Undergraduate

The Department of Economics at Western Michigan University has several scholarships available to students.

Werner Sichel Undergraduate Prize

This award is given to the winner of the department’s Presidential Scholar Award. Scholarship recipients are selected by Economics Department faculty. No application process is required.

Bill Monroe Scholarship

One or more awards are presented to outstanding senior economics majors.  Scholarship recipients are selected by Economics Department faculty. No application process is required.

In 2018, this scholarship was awarded to graduating senior Andrew Moore.

Charles Carlisle Scholarship

Carlisle Scholarships are awarded to economics majors in financial need. Similar to the College of Arts and Sciences’ retention awards, students are selected based on good academic standing, senior status, and financial need. No application process is required.

 

Graduate

Funding opportunities for graduate students.

Graduate assistantships

A number of assistantships are awarded to economics Ph.D. students each year. Recipients are selected by a department committee on a competitive basis. Financial assistance is limited to four years. Submit your application by Feb. 1.

The Carol G. Stull Award

Awarded to Economics Department graduate students to defray travel expenses incurred when giving paper presentations at conferences. One or two awards may be made annually. The awards range $200-$500 per award. To receive this award, the student must have applied for a travel grant from the Graduate College. To apply for the Carol G. Stull award, please turn in a copy of your completed Graduate College travel application to the Graduate Director in the Department of Economics. Awards will be made once a year, usually in April.

Study abroad

Funding is available for domestic students planning to study abroad.
