Setting a new standard

The Alpha Program is a first-year experience designed to support scholars as they transition into college life at WMU. Through personalized advising, peer mentorship, and identity-centered programming, Alpha creates a space where scholars feel seen, supported, and celebrated from day one.

Whether you're exploring your academic path, building community, or discovering your voice, Alpha offers the tools, relationships, and experiences to help you thrive. Scholars in the program engage in workshops, milestone events, and a two-credit First Year Experience course—all designed to promote confidence, belonging, and academic success.

Selection and Invitation
Alpha scholars are selected based on a combination of admissions data, academic potential, and alignment with the program’s mission to affirm identity and promote student success. Invitations are extended to incoming first-year students who demonstrate a strong capacity for growth, leadership, and engagement. Selected scholars will receive direct communication from the Alpha Program with next steps for enrollment and orientation.

As an Alpha scholar, you will:
  • Participate in Summer Orientation and the Alpha Transition Program during Fall Welcome Week.
  • Enroll in a two-credit First Year Experience course tailored to your goals and identity.
  • Connect with a dedicated peer mentor who supports you throughout your first year.
  • Attend affirming engagement events that celebrate your journey and build community.
  • Receive personalized advising and guidance from Alpha Program staff.
  • Engage with campus life and explore leadership, advocacy, and creative expression.

Alpha is more than a program—it’s a collegiate experience designed to elevate your voice, strengthen your foundation, and launch your success at WMU.
