Band Camp Reminders
This Day in History: (1920) When Tennessee ratified the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, the three-quarters of the states necessary was achieved and American women got the right to vote.

Here are a few important announcements from Mr. Montgomery,
Greetings BMB! Things are coming together nicely and we are counting down to the start of band camp. Here are a few reminders:

1) Report Times: Be sure to know when you are to report to camp. Email the band office or a section leader if you are unsure. As a reminder, here are the report times (not including dorm move ins).

• Staff - Saturday, August 23rd, 3:30pm in Rehearsal B at Dalton.
• Guard/Drums - Sunday, August 24th, 3pm meeting in the Recital Hall at Dalton.
• Hornline - Monday, August 25th, 5pm meeting in the Recital Hall at Dalton.

2) Schedule and Food: Once band camp begins, we will follow the following schedule for rehearsals: 8:30-11:30am; 1-5pm; 6:30-9pm. The BMB will provide lunch each day (through Thursday) until WMU Dining Services begins service on Friday. Beginning on Friday, we will no longer provide lunch. Additionally, the BMB does not provide dinners - so be sure to bring money for this.

3) Labor Day Weekend Schedule: The above schedule takes us to the weekend and will allow us to get most of the work done. However, it will still be necessary to rehearse some over Labor Day weekend. All rehearsals are mandatory. The following is the schedule:

• Saturday, August 30th - Rehearsal is 9am-12pm only (no afternoon or evening rehearsals)
• Sunday, August 31st - No Rehearsal!
• Monday, September 1st - Rehearsal is 3-6pm
• Tuesday, September 2nd - Classes begin; rehearsals are 4-5:40pm each day.

4) Shoes: We will be ordering our marching shoes during band camp. The cost is $32 (including tax) but the shoe company only accepts cash. . . so do not bring checks. If you marched black shoes in high school and believe they are still in good shape, you can bring them for Mr. Montgomery's approval. If they are not approved, then you will need to buy new ones. VETS - some of you need to get new shoes too!

5) School Instruments and Mouthpieces: School instruments will be provided to those who requested them on their confirmation forms. These will be issued after the first meeting at 5pm on Monday. We will issue equipment then proceed directly to rehearsals. Be sure to wear comfortable clothes and shoes to the meeting. The BMB does have a supply of mouthpieces, however, most people prefer to play on their own and we encourage this. Be sure to bring your own mouthpiece if you have one.

6) Music: Everyone should bring to camp ALL of the music available off the website. Music for pre-game, cheers and warm-ups etc is already available. The music for the first show will be up by the end of this week. Drumline warm-ups are already available on www.wmudrumline.com, but show parts will not be assigned until after auditions.

Excitement is building as camp approaches. Let us know if you have any questions. See you in a few days!

Drum Major & Staff Audition Times!
This Day in History: (1993) Rock musician and composer Frank Zappa died at age 52.

• IMPORTANT STAFF AUDITION ANNOUNCEMENT- READ ENTIRE ANNOUNCEMENT!
Audition times and locations for 2008 staff auditions are posted outside of Mr. Montgomery's office (1426 Dalton). Check your time and let Mr. Montgomery know immediately if there is a conflict with your scheduled time. Please understand that if you miss your scheduled interview there will most likely not be time to reschedule. Do not be late for your scheduled time. We do not have time to wait on you.

• DRUM MAJOR CANDIDATES
The first round of drum major auditions will consist of a conducting audition and a brief interview and will be Tuesday, December 11 in Rehearsal Room B (1120) of Dalton Center. After the first round a finalist list will be posted and the new scores for conducting will be available for the final round which will be Thursday, January 10. These scores will also be available online.

• ENSEMBLE NEEDED FOR DRUM MAJOR AUDITIONS
We need an ensemble for the drum major candidates to conduct in both rounds of the auditions. Auditions will be in Rehearsal Room B (1120) of Dalton Center on Tuesday, December 11 from 5-11:45pm and Thursday, January 10 from 4-7pm. Bring your instrument and music for both sessions. The first round music will be "The Cowboys." Final round music will be announced later. Tubas and horns may use concert instruments for the auditions. It is very important that we have full instrumentation for these auditions. Come support your friends and watch everybody sweat.

• FINAL THOUGHT ON AUDITIONS
There has been a great response from those interested in 2008 staff positions. The decisions will no doubt be very difficult because of both the quality and quantity of applications. As someone who has been through many auditions myself, I've learned that you have to work hard to prepare, be totally focused and honest, and give your best effort. It is important to be confident and in control of your emotions. True artists approach their craft with a cool head and a warm heart. Be as positive as you can and let the chips fall where they may. Undoubtedly there will be those who will be disappointed with the outcome of the results. You must still remain positive and look for other ways to contribute to our band. Remember that the greatest rewards come from the greatest commitments. Next year is going to be a great year and I look forward to beginning this process. Let me know if you have any questions. Best of luck!
