Changing Your Current Major to Aviation Flight Science

Thank you for your interest in changing your major to aviation flight science. As part of this process, the College of Aviation will be initiating a standard practice each year to facilitate requests. Please note, due to the competitive nature of this process, the College of Aviation will NOT guarantee each request will be honored.  The number of students that will be allowed to change their major to flight science , or add flight science as a secondary major, will be determined annually after a careful review of all variables.  

Adding/changing major to Flight Science consideration

  • During the end of the Fall semester, the College of Aviation will review all of the data necessary to determine the number of major changes that will be allowed for the upcoming year. First semester students may apply prior to final grades being issues (no GPA established).
  • Students interested in changing their major, or adding aviation flight science as a secondary major must meet the minimum requirements as details and submit the following items:
  1. Minimum WMU GPA of 3.00 or higher - this process requires a student to have completed at least one semester of full-time academic work at Western Michigan University
  2. Successfully completed either WMU MATH 1100 or higher, or the WMU PHYS 1070 course with a grade of "C" or better.  Successful completion of MATH 1100 may be met by math placement into Math 1110

  3. Proof of (First Class/Second Class) FAA Aviation Medical. Please save the document as a pdf and submit the medical in the following format: (Year) FAA Aviation Medical - Last name, First name. Failure to do so may result in the inability to change majors. 

    Example: "2025 FAA Aviation Medical - Bronco, Buster"

  4. Submit a maximum of five bullet points on why you want to change your major to flight science, or add it as a secondary major, and why your should earn the opportunity for the limited openings.

  • Deadline: December 15
  • Decision Information: January 15 - students will be emailed regarding their approval or denial.
  • Application will open on November 15 of each year.
