Football at Michigan rescheduled for Sept. 22
Sept. 16, 2001
KALAMAZOO -- The football contest between Western Michigan
University and the University of Michigan has been rescheduled
for Saturday, Sept. 22, in Ann Arbor. Details regarding starting
time and television coverage will be announced within a few days.
Athletic department officials at WMU and Michigan agreed Friday
night to the new date. Western Michigan's scheduled home game
against Ball State at "Southwest Fest" on Sept. 22
will be rescheduled to a date to be announced. Michigan, which
had planned to open its Big Ten schedule by hosting Illinois
on Sept. 22, will also move that match up to a later date to
be announced.
"There was an extreme amount of cooperation between the
Mid-American Conference and the Big Ten Conference to make this
series of events work," said Kathy Beauregard, WMU athletic
director. She also acknowledged and thanked the football coaches
and athletic directors at Ball State and Illinois for their cooperation.
Originally scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 15, the football
contest at Michigan was postponed following terrorist attacks
on the United States on Sept. 11. All NCAA Division I-A football
games and nearly all professional sporting events were suspended
through today, Sept. 16.
Western Michigan University suspended all varsity sports contests
beginning the day of the attack and continuing through today
(Sept. 16). In addition to football, other WMU teams with contests
canceled or postponed were men's and women's cross country, men's
and women's soccer, softball and volleyball.
The volleyball team was scheduled to compete Friday and Saturday,
Sept. 14-15, at a tournament in Columbus, Ohio, hosted by Ohio
State University. In addition to WMU and Ohio State, other teams
scheduled for that tournament were San Diego State and West Virginia.
The Ohio State tournament was canceled and will not be rescheduled
this year.
The volleyball team's next contest will be Friday, Sept. 21,
when the Broncos open defense of their MAC championship at Bowling
Green beginning at 7 p.m.
