Students honored by Department of Foreign Languages and Linguistics

KALAMAZOO -- Forty-three WMU students were honored for achievement this spring by the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures.

The department awarded scholarships totaling more than $17,250 at its annual Honors and Awards Day and honored students for excellence in the study of foreign languages and literatures.

MICHIGAN--

BATTLE CREEK-- Isabelle Green, 944 Hillbrook Drive. A $600 Department Travel/Study Abroad Award to pursue her study in French.

BAY CITY-- Marc Meisel, 4708 Maplewood Drive. The $250 Margaret H. Brooks Award, as well as the Department Travel/Study Abroad Award for $600 to continue his study of the French language in France.

Sara Miller, 5030 S. Two Mile Road. The Mathilde Steckelberg Scholarship in Spanish, a $750 award presented to language majors demonstrating outstanding academic performance and potential.

BREEDSVILLE-- Eliamar Reyna, P.O. Box 58. The Ruth Y. Kirby Scholarship Award in Spanish, a $1,250 award that provides financial assistance for Spanish majors. The award is made possible through a donation by the late Ruth Y. Kirby, who taught Spanish in the Kalamazoo community.

CANTON-- Loren Gross, 44573 Nantucket. The John B. Dorstewitz Award in French for excellence in French study, given in honor of a former WMU French major who, while pursuing a master's degree in linguistics at Georgetown University, was tragically killed in an accident in 1997.

CHARLOTTE-- Jill Sirbaugh, 2735 Tackard Highway. The Excellence in Russian Award in recognition of academic achievement in Russian.

COLDWATER-- Jessica Rieger, 141 E. Garfield Road. The Special Achievement Award for excellence in French study, as well as an Excellence in Russian Award for exemplary academic achievement in her study of Russian language.

EAST LANSING-- Meghan Hunt, 1530 Mount Vernon. The Premio Rosalía de Castro, awarded for demonstrating overall excellence in the study of Spanish language and literature.

EAU CLAIRE-- Michele Wagner, 7678 E. Main. The Eunice E. Kraft Award for Excellence in Latin. This award is given in honor of Eunice E. Kraft, a 1918 graduate of WMU and a loved and respected professor of Latin at the University for more than 40 years.

ELK RAPIDS-- Ben Tschudy, 209 River St. The Premio Jorge Luis Borges, awarded for demonstrating overall excellence in the study of the Spanish language.

FENNVILLE-- Bonifacio Rodríguez III, 129 Walter St. The Ruth Y. Kirby Scholarship Award in Spanish, a $1,250 award that provides financial assistance for Spanish majors. The award is made possible through a donation by the late Ruth Y. Kirby, who taught Spanish in the Kalamazoo community.

GROSSE ILE-- Kara Howell, 8586 Stout. The Premio Suzanne M. Wheatley, an award named in honor of a Spanish major who was killed in an accident in 1988. The award is given to a student on the basis of academic performance and an interest in traveling to Spain.

GROSSE POINTE-- Julianne Cassin, 1400 Howard Road. The Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, awarded to recognize excellence in the study of Spanish language and literature.

JACKSON-- Wesley Fracker, 4023 E. Franklin Road. The Ruth Y. Kirby Scholarship Award in Spanish, a $1,250 award that provides financial assistance for Spanish majors. The award is made possible through a donation by the late Ruth Y. Kirby, who taught Spanish in the Kalamazoo community.

KALAMAZOO-- Margaret Bildner, 134 Stirling. A $600 Department Travel/Study Abroad Award to pursue her study of French.

Margaret Bullard, 544 N. Clarendon. The Herb B. Jones Scholarship in Spanish, a $500 award for demonstrating overall excellence in written and spoken Spanish.

Irene de Hoyos de Marquina, 4731 Wimbleton Way. The Premio Especial de la Sección de Español for outstanding achievement in special projects.

Melissa Deer, 4507 W. Main St., #C-12. The Prix d'Honneur de l'Ambassadeur de France, an award for excellence given by the French Embassy to the outstanding student of French in the graduating class.

Emily Gersch, 734 W. Kilgore Road, #306. The Russian Club Award for exemplary participation in the Russian Club as an officer and member.

William Hamilton, 314 N. Prairie Avenue, #2. The Mathilde Steckelberg Scholarship Award in Classics, a $750 award presented to language students demonstrating outstanding academic performance and potential.

Eriko Hattori, 207 Bigelow Hall, WMU. The Frances E. Noble Prize for Excellence in French, an award for having the highest grade point average in French among graduating French majors.

Kathleen Marx, 2331 Springhill Drive. The Victor Coutant Award in Classics, a $100 award presented to an outstanding student in Latin or Greek.

Martha Pacheco, 8086 S. 10th St. The Premio Alfonso X el Sabio, awarded to recognize overall excellence in the study of Spanish language and literature.

Mariana Silva, 4743 Wimbleton Way. The Special Achievement Award for excellence in French study.

Khrista Simpson, 1002 S. Westnedge Avenue, #1. The Mathilde Steckelberg Scholarship in German, a $750 award presented to language students demonstrating outstanding academic performance and potential.

Wendy Unser, 5163 Burning Tree. The Premio Octavio Paz, for demonstrating overall excellence in the study of Spanish language and literature.

Ursula Zambrano, 220 S. Kendall, #12. The Hermann E. Rothfuss Award for Excellence in German, a $1,000 award for demonstrating outstanding academic performance in the study of the German language.

Vadim Zelikov, 926 Austin St. The Russian Club Award for exemplary participation in the Russian Club as an officer and member.

MARQUETTE-- Daniel Lynott, 115 E. Crescent St. The Ruth Y. Kirby Scholarship Award in Spanish, a $1,250 award that provides financial assistance for Spanish majors. The award is made possible through a donation by the late Ruth Y. Kirby, who taught Spanish in the Kalamazoo community.

MONTAGUE-- Stephen Shubert, 8798 Westwood Lane. The Premio Joan Coromines for exemplary academic achievement in the study of Spanish language and literature.

MOUNT PLEASANT-- Tonya Pulver, 1417 Bennett Court. The President's Award for Study Abroad, a $2,500 award given to a foreign language major to study abroad for at least one semester. A minimum 3.0 overall grade point average and a 3.2 major GPA are required.

OSHTEMO-- Andrés Herrera, P.O. Box 43. The Ruth Y. Kirby Scholarship Award in Spanish, a $1,250 award that provides financial assistance for Spanish majors. The award is made possible through a donation by the late Ruth Y. Kirby, who taught Spanish in the Kalamazoo community.

PLAINWELL-- Peter Chaivre, 808 Thomas St. The Excellence in Russian Award in recognition of academic achievement in Russian.

PLYMOUTH-- Jennifer Barrett, 1495 Maple. The Ruth Y. Kirby Award in Spanish, a $1,250 award that provides financial assistance for Spanish majors. The award is made possible through a donation by the late Ruth Y. Kirby, who taught Spanish in the Kalamazoo community.

PORTAGE-- Katie E'nama, 1228 Brent Ave. The Mathilde Steckelberg Scholarship in French, a $750 award presented to language majors demonstrating outstanding academic performance and potential.

Gordana Murphy, 11063 Meadow St. The Preis der Bundesrepublik, an award given in recognition of outstanding work in the study of German.

Amy Slagle, 5429 Meredith, #1-G. The Excellence in Russian Award for exemplary academic achievement in her study of Russian language.

SOUTHFIELD-- Naomi Millán, 19070 Melrose Ave. A $600 Department Travel/Study Abroad Award to pursue her study in French, as well as the Special Achievement Award for excellent academic performance in French.

WEST BLOOMFIELD-- Kimberly Butters, 5410 Claridge Lane. The Premio María Moliner, awarded for excellence in the study of Spanish language and literature.

Kelly Kimberly, 7065 Hillside Drive. The Prix de l'Alliance Française, awarded to recognize student involvement in French activities.

WILLIAMSBURG-- Aimee Hill, 3062 Palaestrum Road. The Russian Club Award for exemplary participation in the Russian Club as an officer and member.

ILLINOIS--

ELMHURST-- Michele Bradford, 453 Fairview Ave. The Premio Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, an award that recognizes overall excellence in the study of Spanish language and literature.

NAPERVILLE-- Cynthia Schleyer, 847 Chancellor Court. The Prix de l'Alliance Française, awarded to recognize student involvement in French activities.
