WMU, area law enforcement to conduct training exercise in Knauss Hall during fall break
KALAMAZOO, Mich.— The Western Michigan University Department of Public Safety will join Kalamazoo-area law enforcement and fire departments during WMU's fall break, Wednesday through Friday, Oct. 15-17, for a multiday active shooter response training exercise in the currently vacated Knauss Hall.
The training will involve simulated emergency scenarios designed to strengthen coordination and readiness among first responders. Members of the campus community may see police and fire vehicles and personnel in the vicinity of Knauss Hall throughout the exercise. No live weapons or ammunition will be used.
Because the academic building is currently offline, it provides a useful location for scenario-based drills that will not disrupt campus operations. Conducting the training during fall break further minimizes impact on campus activity while allowing first responders to conduct realistic, hands-on practice.
WMU Chief of Police Scott Merlo says the exercise supports the University's ongoing commitment to safety and preparedness.
WMU Public Safety, which is accredited for its management, operations and support services, has 31 sworn police officers and works with local and regional law enforcement partners year-round as part of maintaining a secure environment.
