Employee groups schedule holiday events

Nov. 8, 2010

KALAMAZOO--Western Michigan University's two non-bargaining employee groups, the Administrative Professional Association and Professional Support Staff Organization, have scheduled holiday get-togethers.

APA Holiday Gathering

APA is going back in time at the Henderson Castle in Kalamazoo from 5:15 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2.

The evening will feature a social hour with appetizers followed by a 45-minute guided tour of the castle that will focus on the building's history. APA-eligible staff members and their guest may attend the event, which costs $15 for members and $20 for nonmembers.

Registrations and pre-payment are required by 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19. Payment is nonrefundable for registrations that are not canceled by the deadline. Due to room size, attendance at the holiday gathering is limited to 50 people. Registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. After the first 50 people have signed up, additional registrants will be kept on a waiting list in case cancellations occur.

Those attending the event are expected to help preserve the century-old floors of the castle. High heels and other shoes that could damage the flooring are not to be worn. Also, shoes that are wet or that have mud or salt on them must be left at the door, so bring slippers or something else to put on if necessary.

PSSO Holiday Social

PSSO has planned a "Happy Birthday" holiday social from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3, in the Bernhard Center Ballroom.

The event will feature a delicious home-style buffet lunch, an optional icebreaker game requiring a $2- to $3-wrapped gift, and speakers, including two cancer survivors from WMU.

With this year's community service emphasis being Relay for Life, the social will focus a world where there are more birthdays for people battling cancer. Relay for Life is a nationwide volunteer-driven fundraising event that benefits the American Cancer Society. In addition to raising funds, relays across the country raise awareness about cancer, promote hope for a cure, celebrate the lives of cancer survivors, and remember those who have succumbed to the disease.

Registrations and pre-payment are due by Friday, Nov. 26. The cost to attend is $8 for PSSO members and $9.50 for non-members. Payment for registrations is nonrefundable.
