Board OKs easements for natural gas infrastructure

Oct. 5, 2010

KALAMAZOO--Consumers Energy got the go-ahead to construct a natural gas pipeline to Western Michigan University's new Campus View Apartment Complex after the University's Board of Trustees approved an easement at its September meeting.

The easement is a 20-foot wide and 1,100-foot-long strip of land along parts of Western and Knollwood Avenues. It will allow the utility to install the pipeline to provide heat to the apartments that are currently under construction and set to open by fall 2011.

Also approved by trustees was an easement to upgrade WMU's utility distribution system, allowing Consumer's Energy to install a natural gas reducer station on campus. This will assist with regulating the natural gas pressure over various parts of campus. The reducer station will be located on West Michigan Avenue near the Student Recreation Center
