Rent-A-Puppy supports area pet shelters

KALAMAZOO--“Rent-A-Puppy,” benefitting the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, is Thursday, April 8, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Goldsworth Valley Gazebo on the main campus of Western Michigan University.

WMU students and community members can rent a cute puppy or dog for half an hour with a $5 donation and a state photo ID. The proceeds will benefit the SPCA of Southwest Michigan and WMU's Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity, which organizes the event. About 20 dogs of all shapes and sizes will be available to rent.

Outright cash donations to the SPCA and contributions of needed materials also will be accepted during the event.

Donations for dogs

  • Dog and puppy food (canned and Purina Puppy Chow preferred)
  • Leashes and collars
  • Toys
  • Towels and blankets (new or used and cleaned)
  • Volunteers to help exercise dogs at SPCA shelter
  • Donations for cats

  • Cat and kitten food
  • Toys
  • Medium-size crates and cages
  • Tall cat tower
  • Towels (new or used and cleaned)
  • Volunteers to cover evening shifts at SPCA cat shelter
