Career event for Grand Rapids alumniJan. 7, 2010 KALAMAZOO--The Western Michigan University Alumni Association launched a new Web-based service in October called the Alumni Career Network and will hold a Jan. 19 workshop in Grand Rapids, Mich., to help WMU graduates meet their personal career-development needs. The association has scheduled the workshop to introduce the new service as well as provide hands-on assistance with resume writing, interviewing and networking. The workshops are designed for WMU alumni who are seeking employment, planning to change careers or simply interested in updating their job-search materials and skills. The program is free and will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19, in the WMU Graduate Center-Beltline, 2333 E. Beltline Ave. SE. Attendees are asked to register in advance and to share information about the workshops with other WMU alumni. The Alumni Career Network provides career-development resources and tools that WMU graduates can use during today's trying economic times or in the future when the economy improves or their professional goals change. It is a collaboration between the Alumni Association and a consortium of career-related offices that make up the University's Career Network. Along with offering workshops and other events, the new service provides online tools for assessing skills and interests, exploring career options, writing modern resumes and cover letters, and developing strategies for job searches and interviewing. In addition, an employment database allows users to create a personal employment profile, search for as well as post jobs, and obtain as well as offer career-related advice and resources.
