Student HR group earns top designation from society

Dec. 9, 2009

KALAMAZOO--The Society for Human Resource Management has bestowed the Superior Merit Award designation--the highest rating a student chapter can earn--on the WMU chapter of the Society for Excellence in Human Resources.

The national recognition earned the student group additional support from the Michigan branch of the society. Mike Kestly, the society's Michigan college relations director, attended the WMU chapter's meeting on Nov. 18, presenting the students with a check for $1,000 as a reward for earning the award. Elizabeth Gartner and Ashley Heckman co-presidents of the Society for Excellence in Human Resources, accepted the check for the chapter.

"Our student chapter works diligently to develop outstanding programming and to expand opportunities for its membership," says Dr. Satish Deshpande, faculty advisor to the organization and WMU professor of management. "We are all very proud of our student group."

The society's Student Chapter Merit Award program exists to recognize top student chapters, says Chuck Salvetti, the society's student programs manager.

"These chapters represent the best of our more than 450 affiliated student chapters and demonstrate this through their ability to provide innovative networking and educational opportunities to their members," Salvetti says. "These opportunities are extremely valuable to students preparing to enter the field of human resources."

The society's Student Chapter Merit Award Program was created in 1972 to develop more effective student chapters and to promote outstanding activities and projects by student chapters in four areas: basic student chapter requirements, chapter programming and professional development of members, support of the human resource profession, and partnership with the society.
