Statistical Consulting Center launched

Oct. 9, 2009

KALAMAZOO--Western Michigan University's Department of Statistics showcased its new Statistical Consulting Center in Rood Hall with a dedication and open house last month.

The center provides statistical services to local businesses and organizations as well as statistical consulting support and education across all disciplines to WMU students and faculty and staff members.

The facility grew out of trial consulting sessions offered this past spring semester that were well received. Dr. Jeffrey Terpstra, associate professor of statistics, is directing the center and its staff of doctoral students.

Members of the University community may check out the new service by taking advantage of "free Fridays," when those who make appointments from 1 to 3 p.m. can have one-hour consultations for free.

Those consultations could involve such issues as verifying the design of an evaluation tool for a project, confirming that the appropriate statistical test has been selected to analyze data, or dealing with a journal article that requires the addition of a statistical writer or analyst.

For more information or to request materials regarding the center's services, contact Jeffrey Terpstra at jeffrey.terpstra@wmich.edu or (269) 387-2852.
