Day of Dignity aids area homeless

KALAMAZOO--Western Michigan University's Muslim Student Association and other local organizations are holding the third annual Day of Dignity to aid the homeless and at-risk children, Saturday, Sept. 12, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Kalamazoo's Martin Luther King Park.

During the 2008 Day of Dignity, 500 people were served despite steady rainfall. The program provides Kalamazoo area's homeless with free hygiene packs, clothing, hot meals, children's toys and school supplies, among other items.

Donations of new children's toys, school supplies and backpacks are needed. Cash contributions also are welcome to provide for clothing, food and personal items. Tax-deductible donations may be made online through event sponsor Kalamazoo Lend A Hand.

Volunteers interested in helping staff the event or those with questions about making a donation should contact the Muslim Student Association at rso.msa@gmail.com.

Martin Luther King Park is located on Rose Street one block north of Kalamazoo Avenue in downtown Kalamazoo.
