Volunteers needed for annual goalball tournament

Feb. 18, 2009

KALAMAZOO--Volunteers are being sought to help stage the 2009 Bakos Memorial Goalball Tournament on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 28-March1, at Western Michigan University.

The annual contest attracts the nation's top teams in the action-packed sport for visually impaired or blindfolded athletes. Up to 80 volunteers are needed to hold the annual contest.

Volunteers do not need prior knowledge of the sport and will see goalball at its finest, while lending a much-needed hand and learning about the popular sport for blind athletes. The tournament will provide excellent sports entertainment and let volunteers interact with outstanding athletes who are visually impaired.

The tournament will take place in the WMU Student Recreation Center and will include members of the U.S. National Goalball team, who will compete on their local teams. Volunteers are needed from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 1:30 to 7 p.m. on Saturday and 7:30 a.m. to noon on Sunday.

Those interested in volunteering should contact Sherry Gordon, volunteer coordinator, at sdgordon78@sbcglobal.net or (269) 337-3276, or Luke Patterson, tournament director, at lukusp@gmail.com or (269) 278-7307.
