Golden Bronco recipients honored

KALAMAZOO--Numerous Western Michigan University students and registered student organizations were honored this spring during the University's annual Golden Bronco Awards.

The ceremony is an opportunity for WMU and its Student Activities and Leadership Programs office to recognize individual and organizational RSO achievements during each academic year.

More than 175 WMU students, parents and administrators attended this year's ceremony. New this year was the splitting of some awards into two categories, one for RSOs with more than 20 members and one for RSOs with 20 or fewer members.

The award recipients were selected by a committee of administrators from across campus.

Individual achievement awards

Student Leader of the Year, Jacqui Volkmann of Holland, Mich., an April 2008 graduate in organizational communication, of Campus Activities Board for outstanding leadership and demonstrating a strong commitment to the development of herself as a leader, fellow group members and the organization.

Outstanding Student Leader for Community Involvement, Ronald J. Webb of Kalamazoo, an April 2008 graduate in political science, of International Programs Council for outstanding community service and positively contributing to the non-profit community by volunteering in at least one community service event during both the fall and spring semesters.

Registered Student Organization Advisor of the Year, Jacob Arndt of Kalamazoo, a 2003 graduate in organizational communication, of Drive Safe Kalamazoo for his guidance to the organization, significantly contributing to its success and sustainability.

Organizational achievement awards

Best New RSO to the Aviation Student Council for its campus events to showcase the organization, using creative advertising strategies for recruitment and welcoming all students.

Student Agency of the Year to the Western Student Association for offering leadership development opportunities, using creative advertising strategies for recruitment, welcoming all students and appreciating diversity, sponsoring an event that benefited a large portion of the campus community and working for continued success.

Website of the Year to the Campus Activities Board with a user-friendly, informative and creative Web site that the organization designed that included important details for current and prospective group members.

RSO of the Year with less than 20 active members to Ackley/Shilling Active People for offering leadership development opportunities, using creative advertising strategies for recruitment, welcoming all students and appreciating diversity, sponsoring an event for a large portion of the campus community and working for continued success.

RSO of the Year with more than 20 active members to Student Alumni Association for offering leadership development opportunities, using creative advertising strategies for recruitment, welcoming all students and appreciating diversity, sponsoring an event for a large portion of the campus community and working toward continued success.

Outstanding RSO for Community Involvement with less than 20 active members to Colleges Against Cancer for its strong commitment to volunteering that benefited the non-profit or WMU campus community.

Outstanding RSO for Community Involvement with more than 20 active members to International Programs Council for its strong commitment to volunteering that benefited the non-profit or WMU campus community.
