Sociologists to discuss self-injurers

KALAMAZOO--A research presentation, "The Cyber Worlds of Self-Injurers: Deviant Communities, Relationships, and Selves," will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, in Putney Auditorium of the Fetzer Center at Western Michigan University. The event is open to the public free of charge.

The program, which is being sponsored by the Department of Sociology, is being presented by Dr. Patricia Adler, professor of sociology at the University of Colorado, and Dr. Peter Adler, professor of sociology and criminology at the University of Denver.

Patricia Adler has written and taught in the area of deviance, qualitative methods, drugs and society, and the sociology of children. Peter Adler conducts research in such areas as social psychology, qualitative methods, and the sociology of work, sport and leisure.

The Adlers have written numerous books and articles related to their research and co-founded the journal Sociological Studies of Child Development. Their current book focuses on self-injurers (cutters and burners) and is under review at NYU Press.
