Gibbs House accepting fellowship applications

Feb. 5, 2008

KALAMAZOO--The Gibbs House for Environmental Research and Education, a program of Western Michigan University's Environmental Institute, is accepting applications through 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, for yearlong fellowships for WMU undergraduate students as well as a coordinator position that is open to members of the community.

The 2008-09 Research Fellow and coordinator positions provide optional free housing in WMU's historic Gibbs House in exchange for work on a project or study that increases the environmental sustainability of the house, property or community. Selected students will engage in community outreach and will earn a minimum of three academic credits for their work.

Undergraduate students, recent graduates and community members are also encouraged to apply for the program's coordinator position. Applicants will be chosen based on their ability to work independently, academic and professional merit and non-profit leadership experience.

Fellow and coordinator applications are available online at www.wmich.edu/env/gibbshouse. Please submit online to secooper@wmich.edu. Applicants must have a completed application, a resume, a transcript, two academic or professional references and an abstract of a proposed study.

The mission of the Gibbs House, 4503 Parkview Ave., is to create and maintain an educational environment that promotes stewardship for the earth through experience and ethics. The program provides a setting in which to research and generate pragmatic solutions to Kalamazoo's environmental challenges, educate the academic and local communities, and exemplify a sustainable and regenerative lifestyle.
