Care package snacks needed for Broncos in military

Nov. 5, 2007

KALAMAZOO--Friday, Nov. 9, is the deadline for contributions for the next round of care packages that Western Michigan University will be sending this month to its deployed students, alumni, faculty and staff.

"We've received a good supply of T-shirts and WMU souvenirs," says Gerry Schma in WMU's Advocacy Office for Transfer Students and Military Affairs. "Our greatest need for this round of packages is food and snacks with relatively long shelf life."

Desirable food and snack items include: granola bars, crackers, trail mix, peanuts, peanut butter, Pop Tarts, cookies, candy (non-melting), Pringles, chewing gum, mints, coffee, hot chocolate packets, tea and Gatorade powder.

WMU plans to send packages several times each year. Other items that are always welcome and will be used for future mailings if not needed this month include:

Entertainment and WMU items--CDs, magazines, playing cards, dice, small games, Nerf footballs, WMU T-shirts and University-related banners suitable for hanging on tents or in barracks.

Miscellaneous items--phone cards (Army, Air Force Exchange Service, AAFES, cards preferred), AA and AAA batteries, notepads, baggies (all sizes), bandanas, flip flops, and shoe laces (long).

Contributions may be dropped off in the Registrar's Office in the Seibert Administration Building.

For more information, call Eric McConnell in the advocacy office at (269) 387-0740 or Brenda Hamlyn in the Registrar's Office at (269) 387-4115.
