Find out what's new in GoWMU

May 20, 2007

KALAMAZOO--Western Michigan University today launched a series of major functional improvements to GoWMU, the University's secure intranet portal.

Among the first improvements users will notice are: consolidation of key services previously found in multiple locations into one My Self-Service channel; one-click access to course registration and other frequently used services; and new universal icon access to academic catalogs and e-learning, previously called WebCT Vista.

"All of these improvements are based on suggestions and evaluations by hundreds of students and other users," says Lynn Kelly-Albertson, chair of the GoWMU Advisory Board and executive director of WMU's Career and Student Employment Services. "Fewer clicks, fewer tabs and fewer channels makes it much easier for students to find what they need according to all our surveys and student evaluations."

Two frequently used services have moved

E-learning, previously called WebCT Vista, is now accessed through an icon link that can be found at the top of every GoWMU tab.

WebCheck, the payroll notification system for employees, is now located in the My Self-Service channel on everyone's home tab.

For students, a new Student Home tab combines the previously separate Home and Student Services tabs. A single My Self Service channel includes a variety of single sign-on services previously available in multiple locations, including course registration, financial aid, payment and account information, vehicle registration and WebCheck.

For faculty and staff, a new Faculty/Staff Home tab combines the previously separate Home and Faculty/Staff Services tabs. A single My Self Service channel includes a variety of single sign-on employee services previously available in multiple locations, including personal information, payment and account information, benefits elections, vehicle registration and WebCheck.

Faculty and staff also will find a new My Work channel that contains many of the most-used self-service tools for advising, instruction and University business, including detailed class lists, final grade worksheets and more.

Dozens of additional channels are still available through an improved Channel Guide, so that students, faculty, staff and other users can customize their "personal portal to Western Michigan University."

A Bronco NetID and password are needed to access GoWMU. Guest accounts are among the future improvements planned.
