Campus readies for annual Relay for Life

KALAMAZOO--Western Michigan University is gearing up for its annual Relay for Life, a 24-hour walk-a-thon benefitting the American Cancer Society, noon Friday through noon Saturday, April 13-14, at Kanley Track on the WMU main campus in Kalamazoo.

Goals for this year's event include having 60 or more teams participate and raising $63,000. More than $10,000 has been raised to date, and 45 teams are already registered.

The event is open to the public and draws participants and support from WMU students, faculty, staff and alumni, as well as members of the area community.

To register a team, join an existing team or make a contribution, visit Relay for Life of Western Michigan University at www.acsevents.org/relay/mi/wmu.

This year's theme is "Rockin' Toward a Cure." The event is expected to include live benefit performances by area bands, as well as recorded music and other entertainment.

Cancer survivors are invited to participate in the Survivor Ceremony Friday evening, April 13, at Kanley Track. For more information or to sign up for the ceremony, write to the WMU student chapter of Colleges Against Cancer at cac_wmu@yahoo.com.

Building on last year's records

More than 600 people participated in the 2006 Relay for Life of WMU. There were a record 56 teams at last year's relay, raising more than $50,000.

The top fund-raising team at the 2006 relay represented WMU faculty and staff and brought in more than $7,000. Other top teams were Walk this Way, MedHeads, Saint Thomas More, and Colleges Against Cancer, all of which are already registered again for this year.

Individual fund raisers with the highest totals were WMU seniors Tim Hurttgam and Katie Stauffer and WMU staff members Bill Whisman and Shari Glaser.

Contributions to the American Cancer Society can be made online through the Relay for Life of WMU or checks payable to American Cancer Society may be mailed to Relay for Life of WMU, American Cancer Society, 5110 S. Sprinkle Rd., Portage MI 49002-2050.
