Bronco Express opens for student services

Nov. 29, 2006

KALAMAZOO--Call it the "X" or call it Bronco Express, but call it open as of 8 a.m. Monday, Nov. 27.

Located on the main floor lobby of the Bernhard Center, the new student service center will significantly change and improve the way Western Michigan University students receive some key services. Bronco Express is a response to student requests for one, convenient, year-round spot to take care of everyday University business. A five-person Bronco Express staff will assist students with transactions and questions related to registration, financial aid, making payments and their student accounts.

Open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, with no appointment needed, Bronco Express is a location where students can:

  • Apply for financial aid or pick up the appropriate forms
  • Check on the status of a financial aid application
  • Identify expected dates of financial aid disbursements
  • Receive unofficial transcripts and ask basic registration questions
  • Check account balances and get clarification on charges
  • Make payments on accounts
  • Pick up checks for account refunds.

During busy periods if there are students waiting to see a Bronco Express team member, pagers will be issued so that rather than wait in line, students can visit the cafeteria or Bronco Mall, shop for books and supplies or stake out a comfortable place in the Bernhard Center lounge to study.

The new facility will replace the drop-in services at the Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships and the Cashiering Office. Drop-in service for those offices will now be available only at Bronco Express. The Cashiering office will continue to accept drop-box payments only from WMU departments at Room 1108 of the Seibert Administration Building.

A logo for the new Bronco Express facility was designed by Lauren M. Watt, a graphic design major from Troy, Mich. Her design, selected from among entries received in a student design competition, was unveiled on opening day. Her design features a broken "X" with the name of the service center running through the middle.

"The idea behind my design for the Bronco Express logo is the hope for students to refer to the Bronco Express location as the "X," Watt says of the logo she designed.
