MLK Celebration proposals due by Friday

Nov. 6, 2006

KALAMAZOO--Western Michigan University programs, departments and organizations, including WMU's registered student organizations, are invited to participate in a two-week-long, communitywide observation of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, Jan. 14-26, 2007.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee welcomes proposals for activities, programs and workshops relevant to this year's theme of "Empowering the Dream: Living, Engaging, Connecting" for these two weeks. Even if you are not requesting funding assistance, the committee asks that you submit a proposal for each special event you plan. This will ensure maximum publicity for all 2007 MLK Celebration activities.

Very limited funding is available from the committee for guest presenters, equipment rental and basic materials to be handed out to those who attend events related to the MLK Celebration. WMU faculty, staff, students and other program organizers are expected to volunteer their time. In order to fund as many activities as possible, the committee will not allocate money for publicity, marketing or refreshments, but will provide extensive marketing for all MLK Celebration activities.

Some ideas for activity themes include: Bridging the University and Community with Dr. King's Philosophy, Health Disparities Globally or Locally, Perspectives on Social Justice in the Local Setting, The Role of Popular Culture in Social Change, Media Coverage of Global Issues, The Multicultural Workplace, The Philosophy of Social Change, Women and Civil Rights and Incorporating Social Justice Issues in K-12 and College Curricula. Past activities have included film discussions, speakers, panel discussions and a brown bag luncheon series. Other suggestions, however, are encouraged.

Completed proposals are due by 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10. Decisions will be announced on or around Nov. 17. To receive a proposal form or if you have additional questions, contact Eva Jerome at (269) 387-8191. Incomplete applications will not be processed. Send completed forms to Jerome at eva.jerome@wmich.edu; or fax to Jerome's attention at (269) 387-8170; or mail to Eva Jerome, Bronson School of Nursing, Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo MI 49008-5345.
