Memorial service for Judy Wolpe Saturday

KALAMAZOO--A memorial service for Judy Wolpe, wife of former Michigan Congressman Howard Wolpe, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 24, at Miller Auditorium on the campus of Western Michigan University.

Judy Wolpe drowned in a swimming accident Friday, June 16, while on vacation with her husband in Guatemala. She was 62.

Wolpe was regional outreach director for the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards in Arlington, Va., and was recently working on projects with Kalamazoo Public Schools, Lansing School District and other districts throughout the country. She was a cabinet member of former Michigan Gov. James Blanchard and former Indiana Gov. Evan Bayh. She lived with her husband in Reston, Va.

The Wolpes were married in 1992 at WMU, where Judy Wolpe earned her master's degree. She received a bachelor's degree from Michigan State University.

Howard Wolpe was a member WMU's political science faculty from 1967 to 1972 and was named the university's first distinguished visiting professor in 1993. He served three years on the Kalamazoo City Commission, 1969-72; four years in the Michigan House of Representatives, 1973-77; and 14 years, 1978-92, in the U.S. House, representing a district that included most of Kalamazoo, Battle Creek and Lansing. He is now director for the Africa Program of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.
