Track team qualifies for two events at NCAAs

KALAMAZOO--Western Michigan University will be represented by Shayna Sangster in the 400 meter hurdles and by Sangster, Becky Horn, Sheriese Lucas and Joy Eloms in the 4x400 meter relay at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships in July at Sacramento State University.

Sangster, a junior from Lansing, Mich., has the 21st-best time in the 29-athlete field after running 59.10 during the Penn Relays at the end of April.

The relay team qualified by running 3:34.78 Saturday night in Knoxville, Tenn., at the NCAA Mideast Regional competition. The Broncos are 17th, ahead of Big Ten champion Penn State, UCLA and San Diego State in the 20-team field. Horn is a sophomore from Battle Creek, Mich., Lucas is a junior from Ajax, Ontario, and Eloms is a sophmore from Fort Wayne, Ind.

Sangster and the relay team will both compete Thursday, July 8. Sangster will be in the first round of the 400 meter hurdles at 4:10 p.m. PT and the relay will compete in the semifinals at 6:30 p.m. PT.
