Volunteers needed for sports camp for visually impaired

April 20, 2004

KALAMAZOO--College and high school students as well as local sports enthusiasts and community volunteers are invited to help out during an upcoming sports camp at Western Michigan University for children with visual impairments.

The WMU Department of Blindness and Low Vision Studies will stage the 17th annual Sports Education Camp for Students with Visual Impairments May 2-8. A junior camp is May 2-4 in Flint, followed by a senior camp May 5-8 on the WMU campus. The event will provide an opportunity for volunteers to learn new skills, while having fun and lending a hand.

The junior camp will introduce children to bowling, goalball, gymnastics, swimming, track and field, and wrestling. The senior camp at WMU will include all of those events, plus cycling, judo and power lifting.

Volunteers are needed to donate from four to 50 hours of their time and will serve as sports teachers, dorm help, drivers, guide runners and more. In particular, gymnasts, guide runners, swimmers and wrestlers are needed for sporting events. Also needed are managers of small groups around campus and in dorms.

To volunteer or for more information, call (269) 387-3449.
