'Spring Into the Streets' is Friday in Vine neighborhood

March 29, 2004

KALAMAZOO--Volunteers from several Western Michigan University student organizations are joining Vine neighborhood residents Friday, April 2, for "Spring Into the Streets," an annual cleanup of the neighborhood.

Volunteers will meet at the Vine Neighborhood Association office, 511 W. Vine St., and will assist residents in neighborhood yard cleanup and miscellaneous outside maintenance from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Among the participating student groups are Beta Alpha Psi, Alpha Tau Omega and Eta Eta Sigma. The biannual neighborhood cleanup events, "Spring and Fall Into the Streets," began several years ago through Student Volunteer Services in the Lee Honors College, with hundreds of WMU students participating throughout the city. This year, the Vine Neighborhood Association is coordinating the events for the Vine neighborhood.

"Volunteers have been a source of comfort for elderly and disabled Vine residents who would otherwise have difficultly with outside yard work," says the association's Heather Jach.

Anyone interested in volunteering should contact the Vine Neighborhood Association at (269) 349-8463. For more information, contact Heather Jach at the association office.
