Sindecuse schedules fall workshops

KALAMAZOO -- Sindecuse Health Center at Western Michigan University will present the following programs for faculty and staff during the fall semester.

One program, the CPR course, also is open to students. For program details or to register, call the center's Office of Health Promotion and Education at 269 387-3263. More information about Sindecuse resources and services is available online at <www.wmich.edu/shc>.

A four-hour CPR certification course will be offered from 5 to 9 p.m. in 3230 Sindecuse Health Center on the following dates; Thursday, Oct. 2; Monday, Oct. 13; Tuesday, Oct. 14; Monday, Nov. 3; Thursday, Nov. 6; Tuesday, Nov. 18; and Monday, Dec. 1. This American Heart Association course, which also is open to students, covers adult, infant and child CPR and choking. Participants who successfully complete one of the four-hour sessions will be certified for two years. The sessions are being led by Amanda Militzer, BCLS. Prior to attending the workshop, participants must register, pay a $35 fee and read a CPR manual.

A free series of "Men's Health Forums" is being offered from 3 to 5 p.m. in the KIVA Room of Faunce Student Services on the following Wednesdays: Oct. 1, Oct. 15, Oct. 29, Nov. 12 and Nov. 26. The forums address men's physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual health. They are being led by Ric Underhile, Ph.D., CHES, and Stephen Dallas, M.D. Advanced registration is required.

A free workshop on the "Varied Vegetarian" will be offered from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, in 3250 Sindecuse Health Center. The workshop will explain the health benefits of vegetarian foods and how to add more soy to food selections. Soy products contain nutrients and substances believed to contribute to better heart health, reduce the risk of developing certain cancers and decrease symptoms of menopause. Sample recipes will be available to taste. The program will be led by registered dietitians Gretchen Kauth, M.Ed., and Lori Yelton, M.S. Advanced registration is required.

A free workshop on "Is Diet a Four-Letter Word?" will be offered from 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Oct. 22, in 1240 Sindecuse Health Center. The workshop will address popular diets and how they compare with current weight loss recommendations. It will be led by Registered Dietitian Lori Yelton, M.S. Advanced registration is required.

A free workshop on "The Power of Positive Thinking" will be offered from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, in the KIVA Room of Faunce Student Services. The workshop will address how self-defeating thoughts and fears can restrict personal potential and will offer strategies for transforming negative thinking styles and embracing the power within. It will be led by Ric Underhile, Ph.D., CHES. Advanced registration is required.

A free workshop on "Sports Nutrition" will be offered in 3250 Sindecuse Health Center from 11 a.m. to noon Monday, Oct. 20. The workshop, which is specifically for active individuals, will inform participants about the current recommendations for competitive and recreational athletes. It will be led by Registered Dietitian Gretchen Kauth, M.Ed. Advanced registration is required.

A free four-week program on "Intuitive Eating" will be offered from noon to 1 p.m. in 1240 Sindecuse Health Center on the following Tuesdays: Oct. 7, Oct. 14 and Oct. 21. The program will help participants make peace with food without rigidly counting calories or fat grams and to recognize that achieving a healthy, natural weight and accepting your body image are not mutually exclusive. Those interested may attend one or more sessions. The sessions are being led by registered dietitians Gretchen Kauth, M.Ed., and Lori Yelton, M.S. Advanced registration is required.

A free workshop on "Better Bones, Brighter Futures" will be offered from 5:15 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, in 3240 Sindecuse Health Center. This nutrition class focuses on the prevention, detection and treatment of osteoporosis and will examine factors that increase the risk of developing this bone-thinning disease, such as dietary deficiencies, lack of exercise, smoking, alcohol, family history and use of certain medications. It will be led by Registered Dietitian Gretchen Kauth, M.Ed.

A free workshop on "What Is Normal Eating?" will be offered in 1240 Sindecuse Health Center from 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Oct. 8, and from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11. The workshop will examine the signs and symptoms of dysfunctional eating and ways to move back toward normal eating habits. It will be led by registered dietitians Gretchen Kauth, M.Ed., and Lori Yelton, M.S. Advanced registration is required.

A free workshop on "Understanding and Managing Depression" will be offered from 5:15 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, in 3240 Sindecuse Health Center. The workshop will discuss the causes of depression as well as how depression can be managed and treated and will help participants to recognize symptoms of depression in themselves or others. It will be led by Elaine Phillips, Ph.D. Advanced registration is required.

A free workshop on "You Are What You Eat (or drink)" will be offered in 1240 Sindecuse Health Center from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, and from 11 a.m. to noon Monday, Nov. 3. The workshop will help participants assess their eating and drinking habits and inform them how to improve their health through good nutrition. It will be led by Registered Dietitian Gretchen Kauth, M.Ed. Advanced registration is required.

A free workshop on "Spiritual Health" will be offered from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, in the KIVA Room of Faunce Student Services. Spiritual health may encompass religious beliefs and practices, appreciation of nature, or existentialism. The workshop will present three views of spiritual health, provide participants with strategies for pursuing a deeper sense of spirituality and explain the benefits of spiritual health in daily life. It will be led by Dr. Ric Underhile, Ph.D., CHES. Advanced registration is required.

A free workshop on "Intro to Meditation" will be offered in 205 Bernhard Center from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. on the following Tuesdays: Oct, 21, Oct. 28, Nov. 4, Nov. 11 and Nov. 18. This five-session workshop will provide an experiential introduction to two basic mediation techniques. It will draw heavily on Eastern thought and tradition with a strong emphasis on self-acceptance and the acknowledgement of the sacred in everyday life. Participants are expected to commit to attend all five sessions. They will be led by Paula and Frank Jamison. Advanced registration is required.

A free workshop on "Breaking Free" will be offered from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18. in 1240 Sindecuse Health Center. The workshop will address how occasional tobacco use can easily turn into a habit--and how to break that habit. It will be led by Cary Buzzell, BSN, R.N. Advanced registration is required.

A workshop on "Asthma Wellness" will be offered from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, in 1240 Sindecuse Health Center. The workshop will address how to recognize early signs of asthma, develop an asthma management plan and maintain healthy levels of physical activity. It will be led by Cary Buzzell, BSN, R.N. There is a $5 cost. Advanced registration is required.
