Men's basketball team hosts Akron in MAC tourneyMarch 3, 2002 KALAMAZOO -- Western Michigan University's men's basketball team (17-12 overall, 10-8 MAC) will host a first-round Mid-American Conference tournment game for the first time since 1998 on Monday, March 4, at 7 p.m. in University Arena. The Broncos' are seeded No. 6 and their first-round opponent will be No. 11-seeded University of Akron (9-19, 5-12 MAC). The Broncos concluded the regular season in sole possession of third place in the MAC West Division. The 10 conference victories were the most for WMU since the 1997-98 season. Western Michigan won the only meeting with Akron this season, Feb. 11 at Akron, with a 94-89 overtime victory. The winner of Monday's first-round contest will advance to Gund Arena in Cleveland to face No. 3 seeded Bowling Green at 9 p.m. Thursday, March 7. Bowling Green has a first-round bye.
