WMU/CMU Blood Challenge begins

Nov. 2, 2001

KALAMAZOO -- The spirit of competition between rivals Western Michigan University and Central Michigan University moves beyond the gridiron this month as the two schools face battle each other in the WMU/CMU Blood Challenge Nov. 5-16.

This is the fourth year students, staff and faculty from both universities are competing to raise the most pints of blood for the Great Lakes region. The winning school will be announced at the Nov. 17 WMU versus CMU football game at Waldo Stadium.

Although the universities did not participate in a challenge last year, the competition has always offered the universities a chance to channel their collegiate rivalry in a positive way. In past blood challenges, the two schools have collected over 4,000 pints of blood to help more than 15,000 hospital patients.

WMU and CMU set individual goals based on the school size and past donation goals. Whichever
university is able to reach the highest percentage of their desired goal will be named Blood Challenge champion. WMU's individual goal for this year is 785 pints.
