How to market a business through the media

July 2, 2001

KALAMAZOO -- A duo from the Battle Creek Enquirer will tell entrepreneurs how to market businesses through newspapers and Web sites at a Western Michigan University presentation Monday, July 9, in Battle Creek.

The Battle Creek Enquirer's John Whitaker and Janene Weis will present "How to Market Your Business Through Newspapers and the Internet" from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Western Michigan University Kendall Center, 50 West Jackson. Part of a monthly series co-sponsored by WMU's Women's Business Development Center, the Southwestern Michigan Urban League and the Battle Creek Area Chamber of Commerce, the program is free and open to the public.

In their talk, Whitaker and Weis will discuss how entrepreneurs can grow their businesses by using newspapers and the Internet, no matter what the budget.

A native of Battle Creek, Weis was recently transferred back to the city to serve as market development director at the Battle Creek Enquirer, a Gannett-owned newspaper. Prior to her transfer, she held market development positions with Gannett papers in Fremont, Mich., and Port Clinton, Ohio. She has also held positions with the Burnham Brook Center and the Battle Creek Adventist Hospital.

As director of online services for the Battle Creek Enquirer, Whitaker is responsible for the daily content and sales of the newspaper's Web site. Before joining the company, he was president of Harper Run Communication Arts, a Battle-Creek based multi-media and marketing company. He also was owner of a video production and photography company and has worked for a human resource and motivational firm. Whitaker has experience in radio and cable television sales.

WMU's Haworth College of Business established the Women's Business Development Center in 1999 to offer support to female professionals and entrepreneurs through training, problem-solving consultation, current business information and networking opportunities.
