Golf team is 2nd at Spring Laker Invitational

April 2, 2000

ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The WMU golf team earned second place at the Spring Laker Invitational, hosted by Grand Valley State on Saturday and Sunday (April 1-2). It was the highest tournament finish ever for the Bronco team, now in only its second season of competition.

The Broncos had a team total of 655 strokes for the 36-hole tournament. Toledo finished first with a team total of 645. Bowling Green was third, matching the WMU total of 655, but losing to the Broncos for second place on the tie-breaker.

"I'm pleased with our performance," said head coach Cindy Trout, "although I know we can still get scores lower. We need to work on our short putts. I am excited about the momentum we have established."

Last season's team most-valuable player, sophomore Kristen Smith, led the Broncos with a two-day total of 159 strokes. She finished seventh overall in the tournament. Rookies Erica Bieniek and Katie Yoder tied for second for WMU and 15th overall with scores of 164 each.

The Broncos are next in action on Sunday and Monday, April 9-10, when they host their lone home competition of the season, the Bronco Invitational, at The Moors, in Portage. Among the teams expected to compete in the Bronco Invitational are Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Ferris State, Grand Valley State, Loyola Chicago, and Ohio University.
