Hockey Broncos sweep OSU in Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Western Michigan University's hockey Broncos (2-1-1 overall, 2-1-1 CCHA) earned their first wins of the season with a 5-1 victory over Ohio State on Saturday (Oct. 16) and a 4-2 victory on Friday (Oct. 15). Both games were played at the Value City Arena in Columbus.

The losses drop OSU to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. In the first weekend series of the young season (Oct. 8-9), WMU was 0-1-1 versus Miami in games played at Western's Lawson Ice Arena.

Five Broncos icers scored in the 5-1 win on Saturday. Brett Mills opened the scoring on a power play in the first period, and Steve Rymsha got the game-winner on another power play at 31 seconds into the second period. Jason Redenius put the Broncos up 3-0 off a deflected shot by sophomore Anthony Battaglia for the team's first short-handed goal of the season. Other goals were scored by Corey Waring and Mike Bishai.

Down 5-0, Ohio State got a late goal to ruin the shutout for Jeff Reynaert. The sophomore goalteader made 28 stops on Saturday night to add to his 24 saves in Friday's match.

Four Broncos contributed goals in the Friday night victory: Steve Rymsha, Brett Mills, Mike Bishai and David Gove. For Bishai, a sophomore center from Edmonton, Alta., it was his first career goal as a Bronco.

Western Michigan returns home for two matches with Bowling Green on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 22-23, at Lawson Ice Arena. Both matches begin at 7:05 p.m.
