Volleyball Broncos host Brown and Gold exhibition

Aug. 22, 1999

KALAMAZOO -- The WMU volleyball team hosts its Brown and Gold exhibition game on Tuesday, Aug. 31, at University Arena. The full six-on-six intra-squad scrimmage begins at 7 p.m. and is open to the public at no charge.

The volleyball Broncos depart the following morning for a six-day, four-match trip to Florida, including Sept. 4 matches versus Nebraska and Florida at the Florida Sun Trust Invitational in Gainesville. Nebraska (ranked #3) and Florida (#8) are both ranked among the top teams in the nation in preseason polls. Both were NCAA Tournament Final Four teams in 1998.

WMU's home opener is Sept. 10, 7 p.m., versus Central Connecticut. Other early-season home contests include DePaul, Sept. 17, 7:30 p.m., and #22 ranked Michigan State, Sept. 18, 7:30 p.m. All home contests are played at University Arena.

Seniors Traci Morin (6-2 middle blocker) and Mandy Whitfield (6-1 outside hitter) lead eight returning players and six freshmen on the 1999 team. In addition to Morin and Whitfield, returning letter winners are juniors Alberta Griffin (5-11, outside hitter), Kelly Kuharski (5-4, defensive specialist), Jen Nowak (5-8 setter), and Monyka Paul (5-11 outside hitter).

Cathy George, who begins her sixth season as Bronco head coach, was an assistant coach of the U.S. team at this summer's World University Games in Spain. Under George, the Broncos have qualified for the Mid-American Conference tournament each of the past two seasons. In 1998, WMU was 19-13 overall and 11-7 in the conference.
