Event will laud top graduate students

March 29, 1999

KALAMAZOO -- A Western Michigan University campus reception honoring nearly 60 outstanding graduate students for their accomplishments has been set for 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, April 5, in the President's Dining Room of the Bernhard Center.

Of the total group, 29 have been named by their departments as 1999 Graduate Research and Creative Scholars. This is the 14th year the awards have noted the significant contribution of graduate students to the scholarly and artistic life of the University. Seven of those 29 have also been named All-University Graduate and Creative Scholars.

The other 30 students have been named recipients of the first Graduate Student Teaching Effectiveness Awards, an accolade established to honor graduate student contributions to the University's teaching mission. Each department was asked to identify a recipient from among its graduate student teachers. Seven of those students also have been singled out for the additional honor of achieving "all-University" status.

Prior to the reception, at 2 p.m., a panel discussion on graduate student teaching, research and creative work will feature selected recipients of both awards. It will be held in 212 Bernhard Center. Both events are free and open to the public.
