Faculty show international students the business of Thanksgiving

November 19, 1998

KALAMAZOO -- The uniquely American tradition of Thanksgiving dinner will be experienced by nearly 30 international students this year as special guests at the homes of faculty members from WMU's Haworth College of Business. It is a new experience for these students, says Zahida Luqmani (Zy-DAH Luke-MAH-nee), who is coordinating the student guest lists for faculty members. "They get a feeling for the ambiance and the traditions, learn about the significance of the food, how it is prepared and why they serve turkey," she says. This is the second year business college faculty have hosted students at their homes for the holiday dinner. The first year "was a hit" says Luqmani. "At first students are scared because they are going to the homes of their faculty," she says. "But they love it, and all say how wonderful it is." Ten faculty members are participating this year and Dr. James M Schmotter, dean of the Haworth College of Business, and his wife, are hosting eight to 10 students.
