Two appointed in career services

KALAMAZOO -- Two persons have been appointed to positions as coordinators in Western Michigan University's Office of Career Services.

Linda L. Ickes will serve as coordinator for the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Lisa J. M. Walker will be coordinator for the College of Fine Arts and the College of Health and Human Services.

"Each of them will advise students and alumni of their respective colleges with preparation for employment," according to Lynn Kelly-Albertson, interim director of the Office of Career Services. "In addition, each coordinator will develop job opportunities with employers who hire students in these majors."

Ickes comes to WMU from Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, where she worked for 17 years. During her last four years at Bronson, she conducted organizational development and training programs for hospital management and staff. She also coordinated the hospital's career development and mobility program and supervised operations in the educational conference center.

Ickes earned two degrees from WMU, a bachelor's in business education in 1979 and a master's in communication with an emphasis in human resources development in 1991. She has designed career skills training programs and is a certified facilitator for Development Dimensions International, Carlson Learning Co. and the Management-Leadership Personal Inventory system.

Walker's higher education experience includes work as a WMU international student services counseling assistant in 1995, a Kalamazoo College career counselor intern in 1994 and an Alma College career assistant from 1988 to 1991. She most recently worked for Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Greater Kalamazoo as a case manager and youth guidance counselor.

Walker attended Alma College on a theatre production scholarship and was a member of Alma's Performing Arts Student/Faculty Committee. She earned a bachelor's degree from Alma College in 1991 and a master's degree from WMU in counseling in higher education in 1995.

The two new staff members join Deveta Gardner, coordinator for the College of Education; Coreen Lubke, coordinator for the Haworth College of Business; Carolyn Hornev, coordinator for the College of Arts and Sciences; and Anne Coristine, Internship Coordinator.
