Haenicke to step down as WMU president in 1998 (June 27) One of the state's longest serving university presidents, Dr. Diether H. Haenicke of Western Michigan University, announced today at the University's Board of Trustees meeting that he will be stepping down as president on July 31, 1998.

Board tables tuition and fees plan to allow time for public comment (June 27) The Board of Trustees at Western Michigan University tabled a recommended increase in tuition and fees of $322.90 for Michigan freshmen and sophomores for 1997-98 until its next meeting July 25 to allow time for public comment. However, for the average WMU student, the increase would be $212.52.

WMU to offer new nonprofit leadership program (June 27) Meeting the demand for skilled professionals in the nonprofit sector is the goal of a new program Western Michigan University will offer this fall in Kalamazoo and Battle Creek.

Board approves final 1996-97 budget (June 27) The Western Michigan University Board of Trustees June 27 approved a final general fund operating budget of $189,786,970 for the University's 1996-97 fiscal year that ends June 30.

Sunseeker 97 ready for June 19 Sunrayce start at Indy (June 17) Western Michigan University's solar-powered car, Sunseeker 97, breezed through final inspection during Sunrayce 97 pre-race activities this week at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Ron Stewart named WMU women's basketball coach (June 9) Ron Stewart, who has been an assistant with nationally-prominent men's basketball programs at Florida and Kansas State, has been named as the new head women's basketball coach at Western Michigan University.

Brylinsky elected to lead national organization (June 5) Jody A. Brylinsky, health, physical education and recreation, has been elected president-elect of the National Association for Sport and Physical Education. She will begin her term in April 1998.

WMU's Sunseeker solar car set for unveiling; team announced (June 3) Members of Western Michigan University's Sunseeker 97 team will pull the wraps off their entry in Sunrayce 97 during a ceremony set for 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 11.

Two WMU video programs win national awards (June 3) Two Western Michigan University television programs created through the Office of Video Distribution/EduCABLE have won 1997 Videographer Awards, earning national recognition for excellence in special events videography.

Fraire named admissions dean (June 3) John Fraire has been selected as the new dean of admissions at Western Michigan University. He has been director of admissions at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York since 1993. His appointment, effective June 9, is subject to approval by the WMU Board of Trustees.
