Peoples of European ancestry-who over time came to be known as white Americans-have been demographically, economically and politically dominant throughout our history. But in 2011, for the first time ever, a majority of babies born in the United States were not of European ancestry.
In many countries, ethnic divisions and inequality continue to be a major source of conflict, while in other countries ethnic groups live together in harmony. Progress has been made in the United States toward building a multi-ethnic democracy, yet historically outmoded concepts of race persist, as do deeply rooted patterns of inequality.
