    An Automatic Brainstem Response test is often ordered if a newborn fails the hearing screening test given in the hospital shortly after birth. Our faculty and student clinicians perform this out-patient test right here on campus.

The Charles Van Riper Language, Speech and Hearing Clinic is operated by the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences at Western Michigan University. Comprehensive audiological diagnostic and rehabilitative services are provided to patients of all ages. All services are provided by faculty members or graduate student clinicians under the direct supervision of faculty members. All faculty members who provide or supervise audiology services hold the Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

Our mission is two-fold:

  1. Provide well-rounded clinical experiences for students
  2. Provide exemplary evidence-based care to our clients

Our audiologists make it a priority to stay up-to-date with current research and trends in the field of audiology. Clinicians collaborate with speech-language pathologists to advance medical knowledge and treatment through research and education.
