Highway Sensing Technology and Testing Environment under Diverse Weather Conditions

Abstract

This presentation introduces a road survey vehicle, a testing facility for investigating diverse road weather conditions, and a supporting technology for smart car’s recognition system. A road survey vehicle was developed to acquire the road geometric and facility information for road maintenance and safety projects. The road survey vehicle is equipped with several sensors, such as GPS, Inertial Measurement Unit, Lidar and camera. Analysis algorithms for processing the data acquired form the survey vehicle is presented. Recently KICT developed test facility to identify drivers’ behaviors and vehicle performance under diverse weather conditions. Elements and usefulness of the facility are present. Lastly, smart cars’ recognition technology under diverse conditions is discussed.

Dr. Duk-Geun Yun and Dr. Youngrok Kim will be speaking on March 27 at 2:00 pm in Floyd Hall, room D-115

Dr. Duk-Geun Yun

Dr. Duk-Geun Yun

Dr. Duk-Geun Yun is a Senior Researcher at Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology (KICT). He received his Ph.D. in Transportation Engineering from Myoung-Ji University in 2009. His research areas include highway safety and engineering, highway management, road weather services, roadway sensing technologies and autonomous vehicle technologies. In his recent studies, he has developed anti-dew road signs and a road survey vehicle equipped with multiple sensors. He is currently working on research projects on accident risk mitigation technology for vertical structure collision and evaluation systems for smart car’s recognition technology.

Dr. Youngrok Kim

Dr. Youngrok Kim is a Senior Researcher at Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology (KICT). He received his Ph.D. in Transportation Engineering from the University of Seoul in 2013. His expertise includes traffic flow, traffic management, road safety, and highway management. He has developed a nighttime visibility assessment systems for highways, and a full scale research facility that can simulate various weather conditions (rainfall, snow, fog) and the bad conditions (road lighting, noise and so on) to identify the drivers’ behavior and vehicle performance under various weather conditions.
