Tutoring and Mentoring Services

The Office of Pre-College Programming continues its tutoring service at four local Kalamazoo Public School sites. The service is a collaboration between the department, Michigan GEAR UP, Upward Bound, the College of Education’s ED3200 course and the Mentoring for Success Program at WMU. In person tutoring is held every Tuesday and Thursday afterschool. Tutors are comprised of WMU students ranging in various academic disciplines. This is a free service for pre-college students at Loy Norrix High School, Kalamazoo Central High School, Hillside Middle School and Linden Grove Middle School.

WMU student volunteers have the chance to engage in K-12 service opportunities within our partnership at Kalamazoo Public Schools (KPS). WMU student volunteers are placed at a K-12 school in KPS where they tutor and mentor Kalamazoo community youth during afterschool programming. All student volunteers are prepared with a pre-college information session and training to be a College Positive Volunteer (CPV), providing them with the tools and knowledge that will enable them to become ambassadors of higher education.
