October is Cyber Security Awareness Month - Keep a Clean Machine

When you log on to WMUnet (Western Michigan University's campus network), what you do online could impact not only your computer, but other computers and the network as well. By using good judgement, you are less likely to encounter a security violation, loss of data, system problems, or removal from the network.

  • Keep security software current: having the latest security software, Web browser, and operating system are the best defenses against viruses, malware, and other online threats. For students, WMU recommends and supports Microsoft Security Essentials for Windows and ClamXav for Mac OSX. For faculty and staff, WMU has a restricted site license for Symantec Endpoint Protection. See virus protection for more information.
  • Automate software updates: virus protection and OS software can automatically connect and update to defend against known risks. Turn on automatic updates if that is an option. See security patches and OS updates.
  • Protect all devices that connect to the Internet: besides your computers, smart phones, tablets, gaming devices and other web-enabled devices also need protection from viruses and malware. See tips for mobile device security.
  • Plug and scan: USB key devices and other external devices can be infected by viruses and malware. Use your security software to scan them. See using anti-virus software.
