Dr. Decker Hains is a master faculty specialist at Western Michigan University holding a joint appointment in the Department of Civil and Construction Engineering in the College of Engineering and Applied Science and in the Department of Management in the Haworth College of Business. He graduated from U.S. Military Academy at West Point, earned his Ph.D. in civil engineering from Lehigh University, and teaches numerous engineering and leadership courses at WMU.
Hains arrived at WMU in June of 2012 and served as the Professor of Military Science and chair of the Department of Military Science and Leadership until June of 2016 when he retired from the U.S. Army after serving over 22 years on Active Duty as a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officer. His service included a faculty appointment at the U.S. Military Academy, a combat tour in Iraq and serving as the Deputy Commander for a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers District. Notable service at WMU and in the local community includes:
- Chair of the Committee to Oversee General Education.
- Former chair of the Ad Hoc Committee on General Education.
- Founding faculty advisor for the WMU Chapter of Chi Epsilon, the National Civil Engineering Honor Society.
- Executive Board Member of the Southwest Michigan Chapter of the American Red Cross
