Art exhibit offers fresh perspective on WMU Print Collection

KALAMAZOO, Mich.—This fall, the Richmond Center for Visual Arts will offer a fresh and expanded perspective on the Western Michigan University Print Collection.

Founded in 1969 by Professor Emeritus Curtis Rhodes and housed exclusively within the Frostic School of Art, the WMU Print Collection features more than 700 prints from blue-chip artists of the late 1960s and 1970s as well as contemporary artists of national and international repute. It serves as an educational resource for students and faculty.

In concert with the Richmond Center for Visual Arts' 10th anniversary celebration, the exhibition "The Expanded Print: WMU's Collection in Context" will juxtapose classic collection favorites with key loans featuring artists who are either represented within the collection or tangentially related. Highlights include a feminist take on Warhol's much-loved 1967 "Portraits of the Artists" and the recreation of Sol LeWitt's wall drawings on-site as a complement to his elegant 1970s prints. The heart of the exhibition rests with the notion that works of art are best understood when studied in context.

"The Expanded Print: WMU's Collection in Context" will run Sept. 14 through Oct. 21 in the Monroe-Brown Gallery. It is made possible with support from WMU's Frostic School of Art, College of Fine Arts, and Friends of the Richmond Center.
