Summer seminars scheduled for WMU teachers

Photo of a WMU business class.KALAMAZOO, Mich.—The Office of Faculty Development has scheduled a variety of programs this summer to help graduate assistants and full- and part-time faculty members keep moving forward in their careers as well as their teaching.

Those planning to participate in one of the programs should register at least three business days prior to the day the program starts, unless otherwise noted. They also are asked to register for each day the program runs and to show up each meeting day.

Multiday seminars

  • Critical Thinking Intensive—From 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 10, and 8:30 a.m. to noon Friday, May 12; 2033 University Computing Center.
  • Game Your Class Seminar—From 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. daily Tuesday through Friday, May 16-19; 2033 University Computing Center.
  • Redesign Your Class Seminar—From 9:30 a.m. to noon daily Tuesday through Thursday, May 23-25; 2033 University Computing Center.
  • Flip Your Class Seminar—From 9:30 a.m. to noon daily Tuesday through Thursday, June 6-8; 2033 University Computing Center.
  • Seminar for Teaching Inclusivity—From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, June 13-14; Fetzer Center. Register by noon Friday, June 9.
  • Graduate Student Teaching Intensive—From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily Monday through Friday, July 17-21; Sangren Hall. Register by Monday, May 15. Students must either be nominated by their chair or director or self-nominate, and a $250 fee is to be paid by the sponsoring unit. The required nomination form is available at wmich.edu/facultydevelopment.

Other programs

  • Tenure Prep Boot Camp—From 10 a.m. to noon Fridays, May 19, June 2, June 16, June 30, July 14, July 28 and Aug. 4; 2033 University Computing Center. Register by noon Wednesday, May 17. This program will prepare tenure-track faculty—second year to final tenure—at all ranks in anticipation of the Oct. 15 deadline to submit tenure materials.
  • Getting to Full Professor learning community—From 10 a.m. to noon Fridays, June 9, June 23, July 7 and Aug. 11; 2033 University Computing Center. Visit wmich.edu/facultydevelopment/faculty for an online application to join. This program is designed for mid-career faculty and will focus on effectively balancing teaching with scholarly and professional growth as well as service, especially in the process of making the move from associate to full professorship or faculty specialist II to master faculty specialist.
  • Writing to Learn/Writing Across the Curriculum—From noon to 3 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, Aug. 1 and 3; 1022 Lee Honors College Building. Register by noon Monday, July 31. Participants will explore what writing looks like in the classes they teach as instructors. They will gain guidance and support in drafting writing assignments and writing to learn activities in their classrooms.
