Hosted by the Medieval Institute at Western Michigan University, the International Congress on Medieval Studies is an annual gathering of thousands of scholars interested in medieval studies. The Congress embraces the study of all aspects of the Middle Ages, extending into late antiquity and the early modern period, including—but not limited to—history, language, literature, linguistics, art, archaeology, religion, science, medicine, music, drama, philosophy, gender, sexuality, mysticism and technology, as well as medievalism.

59th International Congress on Medieval Studies

The Congress takes place Thursday, May 9, through Saturday, May 11, 2024 in a hybrid format that includes traditional in-person sessions, virtual sessions via our online platform and some hybrid sessions that make it possible for speakers to present and audiences to attend both in-person and online.

Congress Meeting Site

The online meeting site is the central information hub for the Congress. Although parts of the meeting site are open to the public, registration is required to attend sessions and interact with other Congress attendees.

Registration

Registration for the 59th Congress is open. Since the April 21 advance registration deadline has passed, a $50 late fee will be added to registrations for in-person attendees. Late fees do not apply for virtual attendees.

News and Announcements

The Medieval Institute invites Western Michigan University students and other members of the Kalamazoo community to work as hourly staff during the Congress. Please complete this form by April 30 to be considered for employment.

The Congress program has been posted online. Corrigenda are updated daily, but the most complete and accurate information about sessions and papers will be found on the meeting site.

The Congress’s footprint is shifting to focus on Western Michigan University’s new Student Center. Sessions will be held primarily in Sangren Hall, and nearby in the Student Center, Kanley Chapel and Waldo Library.

Western Michigan University recently announced the planned demolition of Valley 3, and although Valley 3 remains open for registration and housing in 2024, this will be its final year.
